Protective Style Prep

I’m Katrina Rountree, and I’m here to encourage you to give your hair a break by taking advantage of protective styles such as box braids and twist. These styles are used to help lock in moisture for a long period of time without constant manipulation. Allow your kinks and curls to flourish!

Please do not be afraid to come to your appointment with your hair in its natural state. Heat is not required before braiding, but if you prefer to blow it out that’s perfectly ok. I do recommend doing a deep conditioning treatment before getting braids or twist because your hair will be put away for a few weeks. I also recommend applying your favorite leave in conditioner after washing your hair for added moisture.

A quality moisturizer will be applied to your strands to ensure moisture is locked in to help prevent dryness. Oil is applied to your scalp at the end of the service, but it is not required. I am a firm believer of finger detangling so a comb will only be used to create nice and neat parts.

Braiding hair is provided, but you can bring your own if you like. It will not affect pricing if you choose to do so. If you have a very sensitive scalp I recommend treating your braiding hair by soaking it in water and apple cider vinegar for about 30 minutes. Shampooing the braiding hair after soaking can help get rid of the apple cider vinegar smell. Don’t forget to air dry the braiding hair before your appointment. Overall, most of my clients do not have any problems from the braiding hair I use.

Box braids and twist are pretty low maintenance, but I do not recommend wearing them for more than six weeks. It’s really easy to wear them for longer than recommended because they are super convenient, but please remember the health of your natural hair. Also, I will send an email including tips on how to maintain your protective style the day after your appointment.

My purpose is to educate you on the art of protective styling to aid in your natural hair journey. Feel free to share any tips with me too. I love learning new tricks to better our hair. My main goals are to perform protective styles which may encourage hair health/length retention and give your hair a break from heat and manipulation!
